Community aged care homes launched in Lautoka

Two new community aged-care homes have opened in Lautoka, offering older residents care while keeping them connected to daily community life.

Women, Children and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran launched the homes at Koroipita Charity Model Town. New Zealand and Fiji funded the project, while LDS Charities supplied furniture and the government is supporting caregiver salaries.

Kiran said remaining in an active community could reduce the isolation often linked to institutional care. Residents will be able to stay connected with children, neighbours and others around them.

Koroipita General Manager Paul Forrester said the need for aged care is increasing. The community now has 62 residents in their sixties and 27 aged over 70. The homes represent its first move toward providing full-time, round-the-clock care, with an outdoor area planned to encourage companionship and social interaction.
