Compensate, resettle Mepe flood victims - Chief

Togbe Korsi Nego VI, Manklalo of the Mepe Traditional Area in Ghana's Volta Region, has urged the government to provide urgent compensation and resettlement for victims of the Akosombo and Kpong dams' spillage. Speaking at the 70th Afenorto Festival, Togbe Nego emphasized that while emergency relief was provided, many families remain emotionally vulnerable and are struggling to rebuild their lives.

The devastating floods, caused by the dam spillage, wiped out homes, businesses, farms, and livestock, leaving many victims homeless and reliant on temporary shelters. Togbe Nego stressed that the Mepe people are hardworking and seek the opportunity to restore their dignity and rebuild their lives, which were disrupted by circumstances beyond their control. He highlighted that compensation has yet to reach the affected individuals.

Responding to the concerns, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu and Minister of Foreign Affairs, outlined several government development initiatives in the constituency. These include road construction, improvements in education and health infrastructure, and agricultural support. He mentioned the distribution of fertilizers, free ploughing services for farmers, and the equipping of the Mepe health facility with modern equipment and personnel. Additionally, two new hospitals are nearing completion in Fodzoku and Volo, and infrastructure development is underway at Mepe St Kizito Senior High Technical School.
