Constanța Port introduces 'cold ironing' technology at 10 docks

The Port of Constanța is taking a significant step towards reducing emissions and modernizing its infrastructure by implementing "cold ironing" technology. The E-COLD project, funded by the European Connecting Europe Facility, will install the necessary systems to supply ships with electricity directly from the shore.

This initiative involves 10 docks within the Port of Constanța and will enable various types of vessels, regardless of size or power requirements, to connect to the electrical grid. Cruise ships, RO-RO vessels, ferries, multi-purpose ships, bulk carriers, and tankers will all be able to utilize this new infrastructure.

The "cold ironing" technology allows ships docked at the port to receive electrical power from land while their main and auxiliary engines are shut down. This process significantly reduces polluting emissions and noise generated by ship engines during their stay in port. The implementation is expected to enhance the Port of Constanța's offerings compared to other Black Sea ports and may contribute to increased cargo traffic, solidifying its position as a key maritime and commercial hub in the region.

In parallel, the Port of Constanța is also installing modern "weight in motion" systems for trucks at its main access gates. These systems weigh trucks as they move, with initial installations at Gates 7 and 10 bis, and ongoing work at Gates 10 and 14. The project includes both hardware installation and the development and configuration of the software platform, according to the National Company Maritime Ports Administration SA Constanța.
