Corfu driver fined 500 euros for killing dog; authorities investigate

A driver in Corfu has been fined 500 euros after her car struck and killed a dog. The incident has sparked outrage among animal welfare organizations and the local community. According to witnesses, the dog was asleep when the vehicle hit it.

Following public complaints, authorities located and arrested the driver. An investigation by the police, based on available evidence, classified the incident as negligent killing of an animal. Consequently, a 500 euro administrative fine was imposed. The prosecutor's office has ordered the driver's release pending further review of the case, which will determine if she will be formally charged or if the case will be closed.

Martha Poultidou, head of the Panhellenic Animal Cruelty Organization, stated that the dog had belonged to an elderly woman and had been with the family since before 2011. Poultidou recounted that the driver had approached the family, claiming she found the animal injured by a car and had moved it aside, attempting to create an alibi because she was unaware of any cameras.

Poultidou added that years ago, the same woman allegedly killed the granddaughter's kitten in a similar manner. Despite the grandmother's attempt to stop her, warning of the cat in the road, the driver reportedly ran it over.

The dog's family has filed a lawsuit against the driver, who was subsequently arrested. She reportedly maintains that she did not intend to harm the animal. The case is ongoing, with authorities investigating further. Separately, in Zakynthos, a 63-year-old woman is accused of strangling a neighbor's cat, an incident that has also led to a 30,000 euro fine.
