Corinthia: Three arrested after fatal factory explosion; video shows plant engulfed in flames

A devastating explosion and subsequent fire ripped through a cider production and packaging plant in Examilia, Corinthia, Greece, on Monday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 67-year-old employee. The incident, which occurred shortly before 1:30 PM, sent a mushroom cloud of fire erupting from the factory, with a deafening noise that disturbed the surrounding area.

In response to the tragedy, the Corinthia Investigation Unit for Arson Crimes, along with the Fire Service's Directorate for Arson Crimes, launched an immediate investigation into the causes of the explosion and fire. As part of the immediate proceedings, authorities arrested the 47-year-old owner of the business, the 46-year-old safety technician, and the 46-year-old operations supervisor. They are considered responsible for the conditions that led to the catastrophic event.

The explosion completely destroyed the factory, leaving behind the body of the deceased worker. Four other employees who were inside the plant managed to escape at the last moment. A gardener working in an outdoor area was taken to Corinth Hospital with a minor hand burn but is not in serious condition. Reports suggest the deceased worker was performing welding operations at the time of the explosion.

According to the Deputy Mayor of Civil Protection for Corinthia, initial information points to welding work being carried out. He stated that the tank that exploded contained 13 tons of cider with approximately 15% alcohol content. The Directorate for Arson Crimes is leading the investigation, bringing renewed attention to the critical issue of safety measure compliance in workplaces.
