Couple Charged in Fatal Assault of Greek Ambulance Rescuer

A couple from Ano Syros on the Greek island of Syros are facing criminal charges after a fatal assault on a 41-year-old rescuer from the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAV). The man has been charged with causing fatal bodily harm, while his wife faces charges of complicity in the act.

The couple was brought before judicial authorities and has been granted an extension to present their statements to the investigating magistrate next Tuesday. The case is now in the hands of the justice system, which will examine the evidence and the defendants' testimonies.

Following the incident, the couple was taken to their home, which had been under police guard overnight, for a reenactment of the events. The 41-year-old suspect and his 30-year-old wife participated in separate reenactments. According to reports, their accounts did not contain significant contradictions, lending weight to the theory of an attempted robbery.

Police are analyzing video footage from surveillance cameras in the area. The Hellenic Police press representative, Konstantia Dimoglidou, stated that the footage largely corroborates the statements of the two suspects. The video shows the 41-year-old rescuer arriving at the residence wearing her EKAV uniform, gloves, and a face covering. She placed her backpack a few meters away before ringing the doorbell, notably using a plastic bag to press the button despite wearing gloves.

An investigation of the rescuer's backpack revealed an air rifle, a crowbar, and a knife, which she was holding. Reports also indicate that the perpetrator's home had been burglarized a week prior, with unknown individuals damaging property inside.
