Court allows VAATC to terminate contract with Energesman

The Vilnius Regional Court has cleared the way for the Vilnius Waste Management Administration (VAATC) to end its contract with waste management company Energesman. VAATC cited Energesman's failure to meet contractual obligations and environmental standards as the reason for termination.

VAATC head Marius Švaikauskas stated that inspections revealed Energesman's inability to fulfill its commitments, including restoring facilities damaged in a fire and managing the large volume of waste accumulating on-site. The court's decision allows VAATC to proceed with emergency operations and resolve problems within the Vilnius region's waste management system.

Energesman had taken the case to court, claiming VAATC's decision to terminate the contract was illegal and that they had been fulfilling their obligations. The company stated that waste processing continues, with sorted waste being sent to the Vilnius Cogeneration Power Plant for incineration. They also planned to clear construction materials from the facility.

However, VAATC has also approached the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor's Office, suspecting Energesman of systematically violating environmental protection and waste management laws, as well as fire safety regulations at the biological waste sorting plant. The Minister of Environment is monitoring the situation but has not yet considered a nationwide state of emergency.
