Craiova Hosts World's Largest Shakespeare Festival, Featuring Elizabethan Village and Global Talent

Craiova is once again proving itself a global cultural hub, this time as the undisputed capital of Shakespearean celebration. The International Shakespeare Festival, held annually in our city, has cemented its status as the largest festival dedicated to the Bard in the world, officially recognized by the World Record Academy. This year's edition, running from May 21 to 31, promises an even richer tapestry of events, building on the success of previous years which saw over 380 performances and more than 70 venues. The theme, 'WILL matters / Voința naște materie,' underscores the enduring power of Shakespeare's work. We are particularly excited about the ambitious 'Shakespeare Village,' a meticulously recreated 1600s English settlement constructed on the Craiova hippodrome. This immersive experience, featuring artisans from Britain and Romania, offers a unique glimpse into the Elizabethan era, complemented by street performances, workshops, and evening concerts by contemporary artists. The festival's reach extends beyond the traditional stage, with free access events like Shakespeare Squares and Shakespeare Metropolitan transforming the entire city into a vibrant cultural space. This event is not just a testament to Craiova's growing cultural significance but also a point of national pride, showcasing Romania's capacity to host and create world-class artistic events that resonate deeply within our community and beyond.
