Croatian inspectors find thousands of violations in tourism, trade, and hospitality sectors

Croatian inspectors have intensified their oversight across the tourism, trade, and hospitality sectors during the peak season, uncovering thousands of violations. Between April 20 and August 1, a total of 13,143 inspections were carried out nationwide.

While 63% of these inspections revealed no irregularities, the remaining 37% resulted in the identification of 7,199 violations. These findings led to the filing of 327 charges and the issuance of 921 penalty orders totaling over €1.57 million in fines. Additionally, inspectors collected €524,221 in fines on the spot and confiscated €508,349 in illegally gained profits. Administrative decisions numbered 2,387, with 1,045 temporary bans imposed on business activities.

The inspections targeted several key areas, including illegal accommodation rentals, undeclared workers, food safety, and trade irregularities. Sanitary inspectors frequently encountered issues related to food safety and the lack of HACCP-based self-monitoring systems. Labor inspectors identified undeclared workers and illegal employment of foreign nationals, while also addressing workplace safety deficiencies. In retail, common violations involved incorrect price displays, breaches of price control measures, and operating without proper registration. Agricultural inspections found irregularities in the marketing and labeling of fruits, vegetables, and wine products. A significant focus was placed on combating unregistered domestic accommodation services, with tourist inspectors identifying illegal rentals and advertising in 149 cases, resulting in 54 sealing orders for properties.
