Cruise Ships: Self-Contained Villages Prepared for Virus Outbreaks, Even with Morgues Onboard

Cruiseships are essentially floating villages, equipped with everything from restaurants and shops to their own medical facilities, including hospitals and even morgues. This self-sufficiency, while impressive, also makes them potential breeding grounds for viruses. As former cruise ship captain Bart Gonnissen explains, the close proximity of thousands of people for days on end creates a unique vulnerability, akin to attending a week-long concert.

While smaller outbreaks of norovirus, salmonella, and E. coli are not uncommon, Gonnissen notes that a formal "outbreak" is only declared when 3% of passengers fall ill. Even on smaller vessels like the MV Hondius, where a hantavirus outbreak occurred, the risk is amplified by the confined environment. Larger ships, with over 7,000 passengers, face even greater challenges in controlling hygiene and containing infections.
