Cybercrime Charge: Sowore kicks as DSS moves to foreclose his defence

The cybercrime trial of Nigerian presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore took a dramatic turn Monday as lawyers for the defense and the Department of State Services (DSS) engaged in a heated verbal dispute. Sowore faces a two-count charge for allegedly calling President Bola Tinubu a "criminal" in a social media post. His defense team, led by Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, sought an adjournment to study documents crucial for their case. These documents were reportedly released by the court registrar only shortly before the proceedings began, despite an earlier request. The prosecution, represented by Akinolu Kehinde, SAN, opposed the adjournment, accusing Sowore of employing delay tactics to frustrate the trial. This accusation angered Sowore's lawyer, who decried the claim as an "insult" and a form of "persecution." The altercation escalated, prompting Justice Mohammed Umar to abruptly end the court session. The judge adjourned the case to September 28, noting that he is not a vacation judge. Sowore had pleaded not guilty to the charges, filed in 2025, which relate to alleged offenses under the Cybercrimes Act.
