Da Lat-Trai Mat railway and station undergo major repairs after 30 years

The historic Da Lat-Trai Mat railway, a relic of the world's first cog railway system, is receiving a much-needed overhaul after more than 30 years of operation. The 7-kilometer tourist line and the Da Lat train station are undergoing extensive repairs, including the replacement of worn-out rails and sleepers, reinforcement of landslide-prone slopes, and improvements to the drainage system.

The project, costing nearly 49 billion Vietnamese dong (approximately $2 million), was initiated in April and is being expedited by contractors working day and night to meet a late July completion deadline. Despite the ongoing construction, the Da Lat station continues to welcome visitors, offering a glimpse into the ongoing restoration.

This initiative by the Vietnam Railway Corporation aims not only to ensure operational safety but also to enhance the overall experience for the many tourists who flock to Da Lat. The railway, originally part of the Thap Cham-Da Lat line built between 1908 and 1932, ceased operations due to war in 1968 and briefly resumed before shutting down again. The Da Lat-Trai Mat section was revived in 1991 specifically for tourism, becoming a signature attraction.

Upgrades also include new or adjusted switches at both Da Lat and Trai Mat stations and reinforced track beds for increased stability. Additionally, two railway-road crossings are being modernized to mitigate traffic safety risks. The project is being carried out across several districts within Da Lat city.
