Dangerous weather expected across Lithuania on Sept. 1, with warnings issued for worst-hit areas

Thunderstorms are expected across much of Lithuania on Sept. 1, with the country’s Hydrometeorological Service warning residents to prepare for several dangerous weather conditions.

Warnings for thunderstorms will apply from noon to 9 p.m. in Vilnius, Kaunas, Alytus, Utena, Panevėžys and Šiauliai counties. The service advised people indoors to unplug household appliances and avoid using electrical outlets during lightning.

People caught outside should seek shelter, avoid open ground, isolated trees and metal poles, and not run. Drivers should close their windows and remain inside their vehicles. The service also warned residents to be prepared for possible power disruptions.

In many places, there will be thunderstorms. During lightning, remain indoors.

Vilnius, Utena, Šiauliai and Panevėžys counties face additional warnings for heavy rain during the same period. The service urged drivers to reduce speed and keep a safe distance because heavy rain can reduce visibility and make roads slippery.

Utena and Panevėžys counties may also experience southwesterly to westerly wind gusts of 15 to 20 meters per second. Residents were told to secure or remove loose items from balconies and yards and avoid parking near trees. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach 17 to 22 degrees Celsius, with unsettled, showery conditions continuing through Thursday.
