Dangote Refinery Recalls Sacked Engineers on Condition

The Dangote Refinery, Africa's largest single-train refinery, has made a significant decision to recall engineers who were previously redeployed or dismissed due to operational disruptions. This move, communicated via an internal memo, signals a strategic recalibration by the management, balancing the need for strict discipline with the imperative of maintaining smooth operations.

This decision was not an easy one. It reflects not only our belief in second chances but also serves as a clear reminder that loyalty, professionalism and adherence to organisational standards are non-negotiable.

Initially, in October 2025, a number of engineers were sacked and subsequently redeployed to other subsidiaries following internal issues that jeopardized operational stability. Some of these engineers were even considered for deployment to the group's international operations. However, a recent internal review, coupled with appeals from stakeholders and the affected engineers themselves, has led to this conditional pardon.

Group Vice President Devakumar Edwin stated that the earlier sanctions were crucial for safeguarding operations and upholding corporate standards. Yet, the refinery has now opted to offer these employees a second chance, underscoring a belief in redemption while firmly reminding staff that loyalty and professionalism are paramount. This decision, while not easy, reflects a commitment to operational continuity and workforce stability.

Effective immediately, all engineers previously redeployed to other business units will be invited for a meeting and, subsequently, will be provided with an opportunity to render their services at our Petroleum Refinery. This would include those who did not avail the opportunity provided earlier for redeployment.

The recall encompasses engineers who had either accepted redeployment or refused it at the time, effectively reinstating a full technical team at the refinery. Management, however, issued a stern warning: this pardon is not a sign of leniency. Any repeat offenses will lead to immediate and severe sanctions. The refinery maintains a zero-tolerance policy for actions that could compromise its operations, emphasizing that discipline and professionalism are cornerstones of its corporate culture. The returning engineers are expected to show renewed dedication as the refinery strives to enhance its efficiency.
