Daniel Kinahan Extradition Flight Departs Dubai for Ireland

The Air Corps flight carrying alleged cartel leader Daniel Kinahan has departed Dubai, marking a significant step in his extradition to Ireland. The aircraft took off from Al Maktoum International Airport around 10:30 a.m. Irish time and is anticipated to land at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, County Dublin, by approximately 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Upon arrival, Kinahan is expected to be arrested and immediately taken before the Special Criminal Court. This extradition follows years of investigation by the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau. Senior Garda members and government ministers engaged in diplomatic efforts with the United Arab Emirates to establish an extradition treaty, which came into force last year.

Kinahan, 49, is reportedly the first individual to be extradited from the UAE to the Republic of Ireland under this new, permanent treaty. His cartel associate, Sean McGovern, was previously extradited from the UAE last year through a special, one-off arrangement and has since received a 24-year sentence for directing the Kinahan cartel's criminal activities.

Kinahan, who has resided openly in Dubai with his family for the past decade, is expected to face a charge of directing organized crime during his appearance at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin. A substantial security operation, involving armed gardaí from specialist units, will escort him from Baldonnel to the courthouse, where security measures will also be stringent. Following a brief court appearance, he is to be transferred to Portlaoise Prison, a maximum-security facility, where he will be remanded in custody until his trial next year.
