Danish Government Parties Back Radical Proposal to Speed Up Pylon Construction

Danish government parties are backing a proposal from the Radical party to speed up the installation of electricity pylons. The initiative suggests that all future pylons should be erected at least two years sooner than current project timelines allow. Climate, energy, and supply minister Samira Nawa of the Radical party announced the idea at her party's summer meeting on Tuesday.

Jesper Petersen, the Social Democrats' climate, energy, and supply spokesperson, stated that the plan involves expanding key electricity grid infrastructure, which includes pylons. He noted that some existing pylons might be decommissioned while new, large ones capable of transporting significant amounts of electricity will be installed. Petersen added that the government will soon release a unified proposal to accelerate the electricity grid's expansion, following up on an emergency plan presented in June.

This plan aims to address capacity limitations that led to rejections of some projects by Energinet under new criteria. Previously, applications were processed on a first-come, first-served basis. However, future applications will be categorized into four tiers, prioritizing critical societal functions. The Moderates also support the Radical party's ambition, with energy and supply spokesperson Lars Aagaard emphasizing the need for more grid infrastructure built faster. He highlighted the potential of using "acceleration areas" more proactively, where administrative processes have shorter deadlines and simpler procedures to expedite construction.

Aagaard pointed out the consequences of the energy transition, stating that shifting from fossil fuels to electricity requires more transmission lines and transformers. The Socialist People's Party (SF) also backs the ambition, provided that local communities and neighbors are involved respectfully, according to climate, energy, and supply spokesperson Nanna Bonde. She stressed the importance of accelerating electrification across Denmark for security, climate, and economic reasons.
