Danube Operation Boosts Water Level at Cernavodă, Securing Power Plant Operations for 9 More Days

An operation to sink barges on the Danube River has yielded positive results, increasing the water level at Cernavodă by 8 centimeters and securing at least nine more days of operation for Unit 2 of the Cernavodă nuclear power plant. The initiative, a collaborative effort involving multiple Romanian ministries, aimed to address critical water level shortages affecting the plant's cooling system.

Radu Miruță, the Minister of Transport, announced the successful outcome, stating that initial measurements showed an 8 cm net gain. "After yesterday the water level had dropped by 3 cm, this morning in Cernavodă, the water level in the last 24 hours increased by 4 cm. The forecast told us we would drop by another 4 cm today. So we gained a net 8 cm," Miruță explained on Facebook. This gain is crucial as it allows Unit 2 to continue functioning under current projections.

Romeo Urjan, the director of the Cernavodă plant, confirmed that Unit 2 is operating within nominal parameters. He detailed how the water level at the pumps' intake in the cooling basin rose by 4 centimeters over 24 hours, contrary to the predicted decrease. Urjan expressed gratitude to all involved parties, including representatives from the Ministries of Energy, Transport, Environment, and Defense, for their crucial role in the operation.

The operation, which concluded on Saturday, involved the controlled sinking of four barges and the dredging of certain river thresholds. This measure was taken as Romania faced dwindling water levels, threatening the continuous operation of its nuclear power capacity. The success of this intervention provides a temporary but vital reprieve, ensuring energy production can continue.
