Daxi Spinning Top Festival Celebrates Century-Old Tradition in Taiwan

The Daxi Spinning Top Culture Festival in Taiwan celebrated a century-old tradition, bringing together people of all ages for a day of cultural immersion and fun. Held at the Daxi Elementary School square, the event showcased the art of spinning tops through student performances, instructional workshops, and hands-on experiences.

Taoyuan City Vice Mayor Su Jun-bin attended the festival, trying his hand at spinning a heavy top under the guidance of an 86-year-old master craftsman, Lin Jin-tai. The festival included various spinning top competitions categorized by age and weight, attracting numerous participants eager to relive childhood memories. Master craftsmen demonstrated the traditional process of making spinning tops from camphor wood, impressing attendees with the fragrant wood shavings.

Vice Mayor Su highlighted Daxi's enduring cultural characteristics, including its traditional soy products, wood crafts, Guan Sheng Di Jun processions, and spinning tops. He emphasized that the continuation of these century-old traditions is a testament to the long-term dedication of local cultural workers, folk groups, and residents. The participation of elementary school students in spinning top activities signifies that local culture is taking root and will be passed down through generations.

The Daxi Spinning Top Culture Festival, now in its fourth year since its inception in 2023, is held annually in conjunction with the Puji Temple's Guan Sheng Di Jun birthday celebration. The festival utilizes spinning top competitions, cultural performances, and family activities to promote local heritage. The city government has pledged continued support for the development of local cultural features, ensuring the Daxi spinning top culture continues to shine.
