Daxi, Taoyuan hit by torrential rain, causing localized flooding

Localized flooding occurred in Taiwan's Daxi District, Taoyuan City, on the afternoon of July 27, following intense rainfall that exceeded 90 millimeters per hour in some areas. The downpour, attributed to the northward movement of southern cloud systems and vigorous afternoon convective development, overwhelmed drainage systems, causing significant water accumulation on several roads.

Reports of water accumulation, ranging from 1 to 20 centimeters deep, emerged from various locations including Ciguang 1st Street, Renhe Road 2nd Section, Zhonghua Road 1st Section, Daying Road 60th Lane, Zhaiming Street, and Yuanlin Road 2nd Section. The flooding was primarily caused by the intense rain between 2:30 PM and 4:30 PM, which overwhelmed the capacity of roadside drains.

One notable area affected was the National Freeway No. 3 (Formosa Freeway) at the Daxi exit. Social media posts showed water accumulating on the road surface, with some vehicles creating large splashes as they passed through. Motorists were advised to slow down due to potentially unclear water depths and the risk of driving hazards.

Fortunately, the heavy rain was short-lived. By approximately 4:30 PM, the water began to recede, and most areas returned to normal. The rapid onset and departure of the storm meant that no major disaster-related damages were reported, although some homes experienced water intrusion.

Data from the Central Weather Administration indicated that the Daxi District recorded some of the highest rainfall amounts for the day. The National Freeway No. 3 northbound at kilometer 63 recorded 93 millimeters, and Yuanlin Road 2nd Section (near Yuanlin Elementary School) recorded 86 millimeters within the specified period, highlighting the intensity of the localized storm.
