Helsinki's Hietaniemi crematorium is currently experiencing significant pressure, with 113 bodies awaiting cremation. The facility is grappling with a surge in demand, which has led to a backlog and a sense of urgency among staff.

Officials attribute the rise in cremations, which have doubled over the past decade, to the aging demographic of the population. Marko Laakso, CEO of the Crematorium Foundation, stated that the situation is under control despite the high volume. Crematorium technician Kari Karvinen was observed preparing a coffin for transfer to the furnace, a routine yet solemn task.

Karvinen, working amidst the operational heat of the furnace, which reaches approximately 800 degrees Celsius, meticulously handles each case. He showed a cremation receipt, explaining its purpose: "This shows which coffin is being placed in the oven." On the day of the report, Hietaniemi crematorium was scheduled to cremate around 15 individuals, all awaiting their turn in the cold storage facility.
