Obituary: Special Education Teacher Mikko Vahteristo Remembered for Kindness and Broad Interests

Mikko Vahteristo, a respected special education teacher and deputy principal, died suddenly of a heart attack on July 8 in Hanko. He was 53 years old.

Born in Vihti in 1972, Vahteristo was the middle of three sons and maintained close ties with his brothers throughout his life. He pursued higher education at the University of Helsinki, earning multiple degrees across various disciplines. He qualified as a Master of Arts, a teacher of philosophy, and a special education teacher.

Vahteristo spent the majority of his professional career as a special education teacher. He began at Isoniitty School in Klaukkala and, from 2012, worked at Meilahti Secondary School in Helsinki. In both positions, he took on leadership roles and was actively involved in school activities, earning significant respect from students, parents, and colleagues alike. Colleagues described him as a calm, trustworthy, intelligent, and learned conversationalist with a good sense of humor.

Beyond his professional life, Vahteristo was a man of broad interests. He was a keen consumer of culture, knowledgeable about world literature and contemporary Finnish writing, and enjoyed theater. Music was also a passion, from intimate club gigs to large concerts. He played the guitar and followed various music genres. He was also a dedicated basketball player in his youth and followed sports that emphasized skill and tactics.

Vahteristo found a second home in the coastal town of Hanko, where he spent his free time year-round, enjoying nature walks and sea swimming. However, his family, his wife Liisa and their three daughters, was his greatest joy. Friends fondly remember his deep kindness and his statement that he felt very happy daily. His passing is a profound loss to many.
