Demolition of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School begins after mass shooting

The demolition of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia has commenced, marking a somber step in the community's healing process after a devastating mass shooting earlier this year.

On February 10, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar killed six people at the school before taking his own life. The tragedy extended to his home, where he also killed his mother and half-brother. The decision to demolish the school was announced in May by Premier David Eby, who stated that students could not be expected to return to the site of such profound loss.

School District 59 officials are overseeing the demolition, which is expected to continue throughout the summer and conclude in the fall. They emphasized that efforts are being made to conduct the work respectfully, minimizing disruption to the community. Furniture and other materials are being removed from the building using covered trucks, and the structure will be carefully dismantled in stages. All building materials will be transported to regional landfills, with the local Tumbler Ridge landfill excluded from use.

While the demolition proceeds, the community is also looking toward the future. Preparations for the upcoming school year are in full swing, with a central complex for the Kodiak Campus set to arrive later this month. This facility will provide essential spaces for students and staff. Furthermore, planning for a new school is moving forward, with the district and the Ministry of Infrastructure set to select an architect in the coming weeks. Community consultations on design concepts will begin this fall, aiming to create a school that meets the needs and aspirations of Tumbler Ridge residents.
