Devastating survey: Half of Swiss teachers deem inclusive school model a failure due to overload and poorer student outcomes

A comprehensive survey of over 10,000 Swiss teachers has delivered a damning verdict on the inclusive education model, revealing widespread dissatisfaction and a belief that the system is failing both educators and students. The study, commissioned by the Swiss Teachers' Association and conducted by research institute GfS Bern, indicates that only a slim majority of teachers view inclusive schooling as a sensible approach, with just one in seven fully endorsing the project.

The findings are particularly stark among secondary school teachers, who specialize in educating students during a critical period of academic development. This group, along with teachers responsible for integrating students with behavioral issues into regular classrooms, shows a clear opposition to the current inclusive model. The survey highlights that 80 percent of secondary school teachers do not consider inclusive education a "fulfilling task," and a significant half of all surveyed teachers report feeling overloaded by the demands of the system.

Despite the critical feedback from those on the front lines, the Swiss Teachers' Association maintains its support for the inclusive concept. However, the association is now demanding increased funding to address the challenges identified in the survey. The data suggests a strong correlation between the number of students with behavioral problems in a class and teachers' negative assessments of the inclusive school model.

The survey results challenge the educational reforms that championed inclusive schooling as a means to achieve absolute equality of opportunity.
