DNA on electric scooter leads to prison sentence for Swedish bombing suspect

A Swedish court has sentenced a man, who is not yet 20 years old, to seven years and eight months in prison for detonating a powerful bomb at the entrance of an apartment building in Södertälje. The incident occurred on the night of March 30 in the Ronna neighborhood.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the explosion, but the damage was extensive, estimated to be in the millions of Swedish kronor. The blast blew the main entrance door into the lobby, shattered the concrete frame around the entrance, and sent debris flying. Windows in neighboring buildings were also broken by the shockwave.

Security camera footage from the same night showed a person dressed in dark clothing riding an electric scooter in the vicinity of the explosion, first heading towards the scene and then away from it. During the investigation, police found an unlocked electric scooter in a basement approximately 100 meters from where the suspect was last seen on camera.

DNA evidence found on the scooter's handlebars and a jacket discovered in a building's basement matched the genetic material of the convicted man, whom police recognized from previous encounters. Prosecutors argued that the crime was severe, connected to organized crime activities, and clearly endangered lives. The family targeted by the bombing denied any links to criminal elements, though police found evidence of SMS and WhatsApp threats demanding approximately 600,000 Swedish kronor (nearly $58,000 USD) prior to the explosion.
