Dominican Republic launches major teacher training initiative with over $15 million investment

The Dominican Republic's National Institute for Teacher Training and Professional Development (Inafocam) is initiating a significant investment in its educators. New hiring processes are underway for training programs designed to benefit nearly 9,000 teachers and technical staff across the public education system. This initiative represents a substantial financial commitment, with an investment exceeding 866 million pesos.

The programs directly address identified needs within the Ministry of Education, focusing on crucial areas such as educational technology, mathematics, early childhood education, and the application of artificial intelligence in learning. Other key areas include Dominican history, natural sciences, Spanish language teaching, and professional development for technical-vocational secondary education.

Inafocam's executive director, Siullin Joa León, emphasized the institution's commitment to modernizing teacher training management. She highlighted that the new public contracting law, Law 47-25, ensures greater transparency and equal participation for higher education institutions. Joa León stressed that training programs are not unilaterally decided but are based on specific requirements from educational regions across the country, ensuring public funds are directed where they are most needed to improve student learning quality.

The entry into force of Law No. 47-25 represents a transcendental change in the way the State contracts teacher training programs. Today all these processes are carried out through public tender and other procedures established by law, allowing Higher Education Institutions to participate on equal terms and ensuring more transparent administration of public resources.
