Iran to keep Strait of Hormuz blocked until U.S. meets all demands

Iran's Revolutionary Guard declared on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz will remain blocked until the United States agrees to all of Tehran's demands. These demands include compensation for damages incurred during the war.

The crucial global oil trade route is currently under an Iranian blockade, with regular attacks on unauthorized vessels. These ongoing attacks have thwarted previous truce agreements, prompting mediators to urge both sides to resume peace negotiations based on a June memorandum.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that talks with Oman regarding the strait's transit and management are nearing completion. However, he cautioned that reopening the waterway is contingent on other demands being met, including compensation payments. Araghchi also clarified that Iran is not negotiating directly with the U.S., but rather exchanging messages through intermediaries.

Mohammad Bagher Zolqadr, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, outlined conditions for reopening the strait, including an end to what he termed "aggression against Iran and its allies." He also called for the lifting of U.S. sanctions, the release of frozen assets, and "comprehensive compensation" for war damages. The Revolutionary Guard emphasized that the strait is now a "war theater" until their conditions are met.
