Don’t sweep Mary Habila, Tanimola’s deaths under the carpet, Falana tells IG

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has demanded that the Inspector-General of Police investigate the suspicious deaths of Mary Habila and Babatunde Tanimola, warning that these cases must not be ignored. Falana stressed the fundamental right to life, asserting that every suspicious death warrants a thorough and independent probe.

Falana raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding Mary Habila's death. She was found deceased and unclothed on June 27, 2026, at the Ebonyi State home of the Minister of Works, David Umahi. While Umahi denied foul play, citing an existing medical condition, Falana criticized the handling of the scene, noting the minister touched Habila's phone. He also questioned the delay in conducting an autopsy after police rejected the father's request to release the body for burial.

The right to life is the most basic human right. Without it, other rights cannot be enjoyed by any person. On account of the sanctity of human life, the following cases of suspicious deaths must be thoroughly investigated

"The death of any citizen in suspicious circumstances is not a family affair," Falana stated, calling for the Inspector-General of Police to take over Habila's investigation. He also urged the Nigerian Medical Association to ensure the autopsy proceeds without further delay. Additionally, Falana called for an independent investigation into the death of Babatunde Dolapo Tanimola, identified by the Presidency as a principal suspect in an alleged establishment.

Even though the Minister has denied any foul play or cover-up, stating she had an existing medical condition and that the matter was reported to the police, the minister contaminated the scene of the incident by handling her phone to speak with her boyfriend.
