Donald Trump and Republican Party face challenges as poll shows Democrats leading on economy

The Republican Party and Donald Trump face potential electoral headwinds, as a recent poll suggests rising energy prices could impact the upcoming midterm elections. The survey, conducted from July 29 to August 3, indicates a shift in voter sentiment, particularly concerning economic management.

The surge in energy prices, linked to the war with Iran initiated on February 28 by the US and Israel, has driven average gasoline prices in the US to $4.09 per gallon, up from below $3 before the conflict. This economic consequence is seen as a potential factor that could influence the results of the congressional midterm elections this fall.

The stakes are high for the Republican Party, which seeks to maintain its majority in Congress, especially in the House of Representatives. If the Democratic Party gains control of one or both chambers, Trump's legislative agenda could face greater challenges during the latter half of his term, requiring compromise with the opposition.

Adding to the pressure, the poll reveals that for the first time in nearly a decade, more registered voters believe the Democratic Party is better equipped to manage the economy. Currently, 42% of registered voters would vote for the Democratic Party if elections were held now, compared to 37% for the Republican Party. A Reuters/Ipsos poll also shows 37% of US citizens believe the Democratic Party handles the economy better, versus 36% for the Republican Party, with 27% undecided.
