DPR-Government Agree: Domestic Worker Protection Bill to Be Ratified Tomorrow

After years of deliberation, a significant milestone has been reached as the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) and the government have reached a crucial agreement to pass the Domestic Worker Protection Bill (RUU PPRT) into law. This development, reported by CNN Indonesia, marks a pivotal moment for millions of domestic workers across the archipelago who have long awaited formal recognition and protection of their rights. The swiftness with which the bill has progressed through the legislative process in recent days, culminating in this agreement at the legislative body (Baleg) level, underscores the growing political will to address this long-standing issue.

This is a substantial step forward from the previous lack of formal legal standing, which often left domestic workers vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. The agreement reflects a broad consensus, with all eight factions present at the legislative body meeting unanimously supporting the bill's advancement.

From our perspective in Indonesia, this bill is more than just legislation; it is a matter of social justice and human dignity. Domestic workers, predominantly women, form a vital part of our economy, yet their contributions have often been overlooked and undervalued. The accelerated discussion, from the President's letter (Surpres) on April 15th to this agreement, shows a commitment to rectifying past oversights. The fact that the bill was debated and agreed upon within a single day at the Baleg level, despite the complexity of 409 inventory of problems (DIMs) considered, highlights the urgency and importance placed on this issue.
