The State Audit Institution (DRI) has released a follow-up report confirming that all 24 recommendations aimed at improving the management of hazardous waste in Serbia have been successfully implemented. This marks a significant step forward in establishing a more transparent and secure environmental protection system within the country. The report highlights the diligent work of various ministries, including those responsible for environmental protection, mining and energy, and health, as well as provincial secretariats, in addressing the identified shortcomings.

Key legislative changes, such as amendments to the Law on Waste Management and the Law on Communal Activities, have been instrumental in overcoming previous technical and administrative hurdles. These reforms directly tackle the long-standing problem of local self-government units lacking the capacity to manage hazardous waste effectively. By allowing these units to contract specialized operators, Serbia has significantly enhanced safety within local communities and improved the handling of specific waste streams.

Furthermore, the mining and energy sectors have seen the introduction of full digitalization in oversight, enabling transparent tracking of extracted ore and tailings. This digital system is designed to prevent abuses related to mineral resource usage fees. The DRI also noted progress in coordinating inspections between the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Health, leading to more effective oversight of health institutions regarding waste management and working conditions.

These comprehensive measures, including the issuance of permits for hazardous waste management, engagement with businesses to ensure regulatory compliance, and the initiation of remediation for abandoned sites, demonstrate a robust commitment to environmental stewardship. The establishment of an electronic database for tracking reserves and waste, alongside updated guidelines for waste management plans, further solidifies these improvements.
