Drapati takes command of Ukrainian army amid Russian pressure, mobilization needs

General Mykhailo Drapati assumes leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces at a critical juncture, facing sustained Russian pressure along a vast 1,200-kilometer front and the imperative to counter advances in Donetsk. The transition occurs as Russia contemplates a potential mobilization of up to 500,000 troops following September parliamentary elections.

Outgoing Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Sirski expressed confidence in his successor, stating, "I am handing over to my successor an army that is not only defending but is also on the offensive, with structure and people who know how to defeat the enemy." Ukrainian counterattacks in the south, coupled with drone strikes on Russian rear areas, have reportedly slowed the enemy's advance to its lowest pace in three years, despite over 250 daily engagements.

However, Russian forces continue to make gradual gains in parts of Donetsk, particularly east of Sloviansk and near Dobropillia, aiming to secure the entire eastern region before engaging in substantive negotiations. The escalating pressure, combined with potential Russian mobilization, necessitates a significant strengthening of the Ukrainian military.

Many observers view Drapati, 43, as the ideal candidate for this role. The Frontelligence Insight think tank describes him as an exceptional officer who has "risen through all levels of command in wartime," gaining unique experience. He is credited with helping to halt a surprise Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region in 2024 and limiting enemy advances near Pokrovsk in 2025. His reputation is further bolstered by a distinct approach to personnel and information, prioritizing honest feedback and valuing soldiers' lives, a style that reportedly contrasts with his predecessor's.
