DRC road project Kasomeno-Kasenga-Chalwe advances toward 2027 service

The Kasomeno-Kasenga-Chalwe road project in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Haut-Katanga province is advancing according to its established timeline, according to the Congolese Agency for Major Works (ACGT). A recent monitoring mission, led by ACGT Deputy Director General Jean-Claude Mido Mbwete, evaluated the construction site's progress and aimed to enhance coordination among the various partners involved.

The mission included an inspection of work in the Kasenga territory and a steering committee meeting focused on project execution. GED Congo, the project's concessionaire, reaffirmed its commitment to adhering to the agreed-upon schedule. Participants also reviewed recommendations from a July 29 technical meeting and adopted a new responsibility matrix to improve collaboration among stakeholders.

Mwete praised the partners' involvement and urged them to maintain their efforts, emphasizing the importance of meeting contractual deadlines, technical standards, and quality requirements for the project's success. The Kasomeno-Kasenga-Chalwe corridor is envisioned as a vital piece of regional trade infrastructure. It is designed to link Haut-Katanga directly to Zambia, offering an alternative to the congested Kasumbalesa border post, a major hub for regional commerce.

Project proponents estimate this new route will shorten the journey between the DRC and the port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, by approximately 240 kilometers. This is expected to facilitate the transport of goods and boost economic exchanges. The corridor is scheduled to become operational in July 2027. Congolese authorities view this project as a key initiative to strengthen regional economic integration and improve transportation infrastructure in southeastern DRC.
