Driver behind fatal 2025 Leduc County drunk driving crash pleads guilty

Amy Patricia Krautt pleaded guilty to two counts of impaired driving causing death for a 2025 collision that claimed the lives of Kean and Shirley Konchinew. The head-on crash occurred on Highway 21 in Leduc County when Krautt's SUV struck the Konchinews' vehicle.

Family members of Kean and Shirley Konchinew, who traveled from across Alberta and Saskatchewan, expressed their profound grief in court. Shirley's husband, Lawrence, shared the pain of living without his wife and son, stating, "It's so awful to live without a wife, to live without a son." Kean's sister, Kellie, addressed Krautt directly, saying, "You got behind the car, you got behind the wheel… you chose."

Court heard that Krautt's blood alcohol content was more than four times the legal limit, with levels between 329 and 381 milligrams of ethyl alcohol per 100 mm of blood, drawn five hours after the crash. She also sustained severe injuries, including a nearly severed foot and brain damage.

Kean Konchinew, who lived in Camrose, was helping to raise his four children. His father, Lawrence, spoke of the children's daily struggle, "My four little girls, they’re fatherless every day." Shirley and Lawrence had been married for 53 years. Krautt has a prior record, having pleaded guilty to common nuisance charges in 2019 for using her phone while driving and drinking. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
