Driver fined 281 euros for exceeding speed limit by just 1 km/h twice in Hungary

A driver in Hungary faced an unexpectedly steep penalty after being caught speeding twice in less than an hour. The incident, which occurred on June 4 near Karancsdal, involved the driver exceeding the 50 km/h speed limit on two occasions. Authorities recorded the vehicle traveling at 66 km/h initially, and shortly after, at 67 km/h.

Hungarian traffic regulations stipulate that administrative fines begin to apply at 66 km/h. Crucially, the law considers each speed measurement as a distinct infraction. This strict administrative approach resulted in the driver being processed for two separate offenses, accumulating a total fine of 100,000 Hungarian forints, equivalent to approximately 281 euros.

The driver expressed surprise at the severity of the fines, given the minor nature of the speed excesses. The case highlights significant differences in traffic law enforcement between Hungary and other regions, where drivers might expect a cumulative penalty or a single sanction for multiple minor violations. In Hungary, however, each radar detection carries its own penalty, potentially leading to a much higher final cost.

Local media reported that the intensified police operations in the area led to numerous other infractions that day, with other drivers also exceeding speed limits by varying margins. The technical report clarified that the accumulation of fines for successive radar detections is standard procedure. This episode underscores the importance of strictly adhering to legal speed limits, as every reading has direct financial consequences for drivers.
