Drivers Warned of Extreme Heat Risks in Hungary

Hungarian drivers are being urged to exercise extreme caution as the country grapples with a severe heatwave, drought, and potential power supply disruptions. Authorities are issuing multiple warnings to ensure public safety and prevent further strain on resources.

Beyond the critical reminder not to leave children, elderly passengers, or pets unattended in parked vehicles without continuous air conditioning, drivers are specifically warned against discarding lit cigarette butts into dry roadside vegetation. The country has recently experienced widespread brush fires, some of which have threatened residential areas, highlighting the extreme fire risk.

Additionally, drivers are advised to avoid parking in tall, dry grass when reaching their destinations, as hot exhaust systems can easily ignite the vegetation. In light of water scarcity, several authorities and municipalities are also urging the public to refrain from washing their cars, or at least to limit the frequency of such activities. With a critical situation developing at the Paks nuclear power plant, it is also recommended that electric vehicle charging be scheduled outside of peak hours (5 PM to 10 PM), and that plug-in hybrid owners consider foregoing charging altogether during this period.
