Hungary announces drought response measures, including potential industrial water restrictions

Hungary is enacting a series of measures to combat a severe drought that is impacting the nation, with particular attention to securing drinking water and public health. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that regional defense committees will assess affected settlements, while the National Waterworks and the Hungarian Defense Forces are prepared to fill reservoirs and provide water via tankers if necessary.

The security of drinking water supply has priority under all circumstances.

Discussions are scheduled with ten water utility service providers to finalize a list of large industrial consumers who may face restrictions should the situation worsen. Orbán emphasized that ensuring the security of drinking water supply remains the top priority under all circumstances.

The regional defense committees will assess the affected settlements, while the National Waterworks Zrt. and the Hungarian Defense Forces are prepared to fill reservoirs and provide water via tankers if necessary.

Preparations are also underway in the transportation, healthcare, and social welfare sectors. Motor trains that malfunctioned during previous heatwaves will be removed from service. Hospitals will continue repairs and upgrades to their air conditioning systems, and social institutions will be equipped with mobile cooling units and fans. The public is urged to follow official information and look after vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, young children, chronically ill, and those living alone, as well as their pets.

On Thursday, there will be a consultation with the ten water utility service providers, where the list of large industrial consumers who could be subject to restrictions in a more severe situation will be finalized.
