Drone with explosives found at German airport sparks national security concerns

German authorities are investigating a serious incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport after a drone equipped with explosives and a detonation mechanism was discovered in a security zone. The drone was found on the evening of August 4th, near a Ukrainian cargo plane.

The German Federal Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation, describing the event as a "serious attack on Germany's transport and logistics infrastructure." Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt suggested the Leipzig incident is part of a larger trend, and while Russia is suspected, responsibility has not yet been definitively established.

The discovery has fueled public anxiety, with a YouGov poll commissioned by dpa revealing that 63% of respondents were worried about the incident. An additional 22% expressed some concern, while only 9% were not worried at all.

The poll also highlighted significant public skepticism regarding Germany's capacity to defend its airports and critical infrastructure against hostile drones. Four out of five respondents believe the country is poorly prepared, with 30% deeming the preparedness "very poor." Only 11% felt Germany was well-prepared.

In response, the government has initiated measures to enhance anti-drone defenses. These include establishing a specialized federal police unit, developing new drone neutralization technologies, and creating a joint anti-drone defense center involving federal and state authorities. The YouGov survey was conducted between August 14th and 17th, polling 2,091 eligible voters.
