Drunk driving judge detained; investigation launched

The Provincial Prosecutor's Office in Szczecin has initiated an investigation into a judge from the Szczecin District Court who was detained by traffic police on Sunday evening for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

The detention occurred on provincial road No. 120 between Gryfino and Wełtyń.

The incident occurred on a provincial road between Gryfino and Wełtyń around 10 p.m. Officers from the traffic police department conducted the stop, though it remains unclear if it was a routine check or based on a report. The detained individual was reportedly driving a passenger car.

Witnesses were questioned on Monday as part of the investigation. However, the judge himself has not yet been interrogated because he is protected by judicial immunity. The National Prosecutor's Office may prepare a request to lift his immunity, which would then be considered by a disciplinary court at the Supreme Court.

Today, witnesses were questioned. Materials concerning this proceeding will be transferred to the Internal Affairs Department of the National Prosecutor's Office.

Only after his immunity is waived can the judge face charges and be formally questioned. A disciplinary court also has the authority to suspend the judge from his duties. Further details are expected to be released on Tuesday.
