Dubai court orders gang of four to pay Dhs1.835 million over theft at gunpoint

A Dubai court has mandated that a four-person gang must pay Dhs1.835 million, equivalent to the amount stolen, after they robbed an American man at gunpoint. The incident occurred in January 2025 when the victim was inside his Dubai residence.

Under duress, the man was compelled to transfer approximately $500,000 in cryptocurrency from his digital wallet to an account controlled by the perpetrators. He reported the crime to the police the following day, initiating both criminal proceedings and a subsequent civil lawsuit.

The criminal court sentenced the four defendants to two years in prison and ordered their deportation. In addition to the jail time and expulsion, they were fined an amount equal to the stolen cryptocurrency. Following the final criminal verdict, the victim pursued a civil claim to recover the funds and compensation for emotional distress.
