Düsseldorf Police Control Over 10,000 in Weapons-Free Zone Operation

Authorities in Düsseldorf, Germany, carried out a significant operation targeting violent crime in the city's historic old town, a designated weapons-free zone. Police reportedly controlled more than 10,000 individuals during the extensive action.

The operation, which ran from Friday evening into the early morning, involved officers stopping, patting down, and searching individuals and their bags. Suspicious cases were subjected to more thorough searches in specially erected tents. The primary objective was to proactively counter potential offenses, especially those involving knives.

During the checks, law enforcement officers confiscated a total of seven knives, two sets of brass knuckles, one baton, and two pepper sprays. These items were seized as part of the effort to enhance safety within the public space.

North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) was present during the police checks in the weapons-free zone. "Every weapon that does not enter the old town makes celebrating safer," stated Einsatzleiter Robin Schmidt, highlighting the mission's goal. Police have indicated they will continue to enforce weapons bans and take action against violations in the future.
