Ebonyi Assembly Orders Crackdown on Illegal Motor Parks

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has mandated the Ministry of Transport to intensify enforcement against illegal motor parks operating within the Abakaliki metropolis. The directive aims to halt activities at unauthorized locations and ensure compliance with designated transport hubs.

During an oversight visit, the House Committee on Works and Transport, led by Chairman Hon. Deacon Joseph Ununu, highlighted that the unchecked spread of illegal parks is detrimental to the state government's initiatives to enhance the capital city's aesthetics and boost internally generated revenue (IGR).

Ununu also urged commercial vehicle operators to cease "pick-and-drop" operations and return to the government-approved motor parks. He commended the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Emeka Igboke, for reducing road accidents and encouraged him to maintain these efforts.

Commissioner Igboke responded by listing the four government-approved motor parks: Akanu Ibiam Park, Spera N’ Deo; Ezeogo Igboke Ewa Central Park; EBOTRANS Park, Nwokpo Junction; and Ishieke Park. He confirmed that the State Inter-Ministerial Committee has begun the process of closing down illegal parks. Additionally, the ministry has implemented an identification system for traffic control personnel to prevent impersonation and extortion, and plans are underway for traffic light installations in identified areas.
