Ecuador allocates $1.4 million for sanitation and sewage in Manabí

The Ecuadorian government is allocating approximately $1.4 million to bolster sanitation and sewage infrastructure in Manabí province, a move set to significantly improve living conditions for over 3,400 residents across two communities. The project targets La Sequita and Pepa de Huso, located in the Montecristi canton, addressing a critical need for adequate waste management systems.

Formalized through an agreement between the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Municipal Government of Montecristi, the project involves the installation of 750 household connections to a new sanitary sewage system. This infrastructure development is expected to take approximately 270 calendar days to complete, marking a substantial investment in public health and environmental protection for the region.

This initiative comes at a time when Ecuador continues to grapple with disparities in basic services, particularly between urban and rural areas. Official data indicates that while potable water coverage is relatively high, sewage system coverage remains a challenge for a significant portion of the population. The Manabí project is a concrete step towards closing this gap, aiming to mitigate health risks associated with inadequate sanitation and improve the overall quality of life for the affected communities.
