Ecuador police bust Chone Killers-linked drug ring, seize flavored marijuana

Ecuadorian police have dismantled a criminal organization allegedly connected to the Chone Killers, seizing significant quantities of drugs and weapons in an operation targeting drug trafficking hotspots. The operation, dubbed 'Gran Fénix,' focused on the districts of Durán, Nueva Prosperina, and Portete, areas identified by police as having high levels of micro-trafficking and related violence.

The National Anti-Drug Investigation Directorate led the operation, which followed an investigation initiated in February 2026 in response to violent incidents in the Elsa Bucaram sector. Police investigations, including intelligence gathering and special techniques, identified the alleged members of the organization, leading to simultaneous raids. Ten individuals were arrested, including two deemed persons of significant penal interest due to their criminal histories.

In this area, the dispute for control of micro-trafficking between criminal organizations has reportedly caused multiple violent deaths.

Among the seized items were 3,763 grams of heroin (approximately 125,433 doses) and 834 grams of cocaine (8,340 doses), alongside two pistols, ammunition, two vehicles, and seven cell phones. The arrested individuals and confiscated evidence were handed over to the competent authorities for judicial proceedings.

Authorities also issued a warning about the discovery of marijuana being sold in various flavors, a tactic believed to increase its appeal, particularly among adolescents and young people. Major Freddy Delgado of the Anti-Narcotics unit urged parents to maintain open communication with their children, monitor behavioral changes, and reinforce drug prevention at home.
