Ecuador security forces rescue 10-year-old girl in border trafficking operation

Ecuadorian security forces, in a joint operation with Peruvian authorities, rescued a 10-year-old girl near the Río Tigre border area. The girl is believed to be a victim of human trafficking for forced marriage within Ecuador. The operation, codenamed Fénix 412, targeted networks involved in trafficking people across the Ecuador-Peru border.

The rescue occurred in the remote, jungle-like province of Pastaza, an area difficult to access. The operation stemmed from an investigation into a cross-border exchange of minors between indigenous communities along the border. Peruvian authorities had previously rescued an Ecuadorian girl on August 5th, linked to the same investigation.

During the operation in Río Tigre, security forces apprehended Santi Cuji Washinton Favio, a 50-year-old man, who was handed over to judicial authorities. Local community members served as interpreters, as some minors and residents do not speak Spanish.

Following the rescue, the 10-year-old girl was placed under protective care. Medical and psychological support was provided, and consular authorities were engaged to ensure her rights are restored. Ecuador continues its efforts to combat human trafficking, particularly in border regions.
