Mexico: 'El R-1' faces trial for ex-mayor's murder amid influencer killing probe

Ramón Álvarez Ayala, known as ‘El R-1,’ faces pretrial detention in Mexico for his alleged role in the murder of Carlos Alberto Manzo, the former mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán. A control judge ordered him to stand trial, setting a three-month period for complementary investigations.

‘El R-1’ has also been linked to the high-profile murder of Mexican influencer Valeria Márquez. Omar García Harfuch, secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, stated that Álvarez Ayala is believed to be behind the feminicide. The official hypothesis suggests that ‘El R-1’s’ son, Francisco ‘N,’ who allegedly had a relationship with Márquez and threatened her before her death, may have ordered his father to carry out the murder. Authorities are actively searching for Francisco ‘N’ as well.

However, the Jalisco prosecutor general, Salvador González de los Santos, clarified on August 6 that there is no current active investigation file against ‘El R-1’ specifically for Valeria Márquez’s murder. His ongoing legal proceedings are related to the case of ex-mayor Manzo, while the investigation into Márquez’s death continues separately.
