Edmonton organizations watch out for seniors during hot, smoky conditions

As Edmonton grapples with a weekend of intense heat and hazardous wildfire smoke, local organizations are intensifying their focus on the well-being of vulnerable seniors. Meals on Wheels Edmonton, which provides over 300 meals daily, has highlighted the critical role its volunteers play in conducting essential wellness checks amidst the extreme weather conditions.

Many of the organization's clients are elderly individuals who face heightened risks from prolonged heat exposure and poor air quality. Executive Director Adam Zawadiuk emphasized that meal deliveries serve as a vital touchpoint, allowing volunteers to assess clients' needs and ensure they have the necessary support to remain safe and comfortable. "It becomes an opportunity to build that connection and just make sure that your neighbours and your community, the people are doing okay and they’re being taken care of and that’s the most important thing for us," Zawadiuk stated.

The City of Edmonton has activated its extreme heat response, extending it through Sunday, as temperatures are forecast to reach at least 29 C for three consecutive days. Environment Canada has issued heat warnings, advising residents to monitor for symptoms of heat-related illnesses. Simultaneously, the fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke poses risks, commonly causing irritation but potentially leading to more severe respiratory issues. City officials are encouraging all residents to check on older family members, friends, and neighbors, and to utilize the 211 service for those requiring assistance due to the heat.
