Edo, FG Join Forces on Water Projects, Security

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has underscored the critical importance of federal-state synergy in advancing the state's development agenda, particularly in the vital water sector. During a courtesy visit from the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Terlumun Utsev, Okpebholo reaffirmed Edo's commitment to enhancing collaboration with the Federal Government. This partnership is seen as instrumental in accelerating water infrastructure projects and improving security around essential national assets, ultimately aiming to deliver tangible benefits to the state's residents.

A lot of resources are being wasted. This is not acceptable. You cannot invest so much and have it destroyed by acts of acts of vandalism. We are taking steps to strengthen security around such areas.

A significant point of concern raised by the governor was the rampant vandalism and wastage of public resources observed at various water facilities. Okpebholo declared that such acts are unacceptable and announced proactive steps to bolster security in vulnerable locations, including the volatile Obayantor area. The proposed establishment of a security outfit and the potential presence of a Forward Operating Base are intended to safeguard both lives and critical infrastructure from further damage.

Addressing the financial aspect of these projects, Governor Okpebholo assured that Edo State would fulfill its counterpart funding obligations for ongoing federal water projects. He specifically mentioned the Jattu Dam in Etsako West Local Government Area, emphasizing that timely completion is paramount as the project is crucial for addressing water scarcity in Edo North. This commitment to financial responsibility, coupled with a focus on timely delivery, aligns with the state's broader development goals and the national "Renewed Hope Agenda."

We will look into the 25 percent counterpart funding to ensure we meet our obligations. But beyond funding, timely completion is critical. Our people need water, and that project must be delivered on schedule.
