Edo NLC factions divided over May Day celebration

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State finds itself embroiled in a significant internal dispute, leading to a divided approach to the upcoming Workers' Day celebration. This schism has resulted in conflicting directives being issued to workers across the state, highlighting a deep-seated crisis within the labour movement.

The labour environment in Edo today cannot and must not inspire celebration. For how can a people divided ever be joyful?

Professor Monday Igbafen, who chairs the Edo NLC Caretaker Committee, has publicly urged workers not to participate in the May Day festivities. He cited the prevailing "deep divisions" and a generally negative labour environment in the state as reasons why celebration is inappropriate. Igbafen described the planned event as being orchestrated by "usurpers and hijackers" and not by the legitimate leadership, urging the public not to be deceived by what he termed a "hoax."

Let it be known that tomorrow’s assembly is powered neither by the legitimate leadership of the NLC in Edo State, nor by the National Leadership of Congress. Those behind it are usurpers and hijackers of the Edo State Council of the NLC.

Conversely, Bernard Egwakide, chairman of the rival faction recognized by the Edo State Government, has refuted Igbafen's claims. Egwakide stated that the name mentioned by Igbafen is unknown to Edo workers and asserted that the NLC in Edo State is united. He confirmed that Edo workers will indeed participate in the May Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, with the state governor expected to be the chief host. This stark contrast in positions underscores the fractured state of the NLC in Edo and raises questions about the representation and direction of the state's labour force.
