Educating with Heart: Pesantren Must Strengthen Educational and Empathetic Nurturing

Indonesian pesantren, traditionally seen as second homes for character formation, are navigating a complex modern landscape. While parents entrust their children to these institutions with hopes of fostering knowledge, noble character, independence, and Islamic values, the educational approach must adapt. The rise of social change and technology presents new challenges, demanding a renewal of teaching methods without abandoning tradition.

The public's attention often sharpens on pesantren when incidents of violence occur, overshadowing the daily dedication and care provided by thousands of institutions. However, each event serves as a crucial reflection point for continuous improvement. Discipline, a cornerstone of pesantren education for centuries, has historically been built on order, communal worship, self-reliance, and respect for teachers. This has produced many national figures known for their integrity and societal concern.

The question arises: can discipline be fostered solely through punishment? Today's youth, immersed in information and accustomed to dialogue, require more than just obedience born of fear. They need clear rules, but also explanations, guidance, and warm relationships with caregivers. This necessitates a shift in nurturing approaches, moving from repression towards education and empathy. This transformation does not mean sacrificing strictness or discipline; rather, it aims to cultivate discipline as an internal awareness.

Islam emphasizes education alongside compassion, with Prophet Muhammad serving as a model of gentle yet authoritative guidance. This principle resonates deeply with the pesantren philosophy, where a kyai (religious leader) guides not just academics but life itself, and an ustaz (teacher) imparts wisdom and life lessons. The goal is to nurture students who are not only knowledgeable but also morally upright and capable of facing life's challenges with Islamic values as their compass.
