Education watchdog launches new probe into 'concerning' school allegations

The Fitzroy Community School (FCS) is once again under the scrutiny of the Victorian education regulator, the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA), as a new investigation into deeply concerning allegations of historic physical and sexual abuse commences. This development, confirmed by Victorian Education Minister and Deputy Premier Ben Carroll, underscores the gravity of the situation and the paramount importance placed on the safety and welfare of children in our schools.

This includes reviewing information from previous investigations by bodies such as Victoria Police and the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), with the VIT seeking permission to share affidavits as part of this fresh probe. The regulator's focus will extend to assessing the Fitzroy Community School board's suitability to govern the institution, a critical step in ensuring accountability and safeguarding students.

This is not the first time FCS has faced VRQA scrutiny. Previous investigations in December 2025 and two years prior resulted in conditions being imposed on the school's registration, including requirements for transparent board meeting minutes, prompt reporting of complaints, and ensuring staff met child-safe training standards. The fact that the VRQA is conducting a third investigation highlights the persistent nature of the concerns and the ongoing efforts to ensure the school operates within acceptable safety and governance frameworks.
